Welcome to Nexirift! This guide will help you get started with our federated social network.
Creating Your Account
Username
You cannot change your username once you've created your account due to technical limitations.
- Visit the Nexirift instance
- Click "Sign up"
- Choose a username and provide an email address
- Verify your email address
- Complete your profile
Understanding Federation
Nexirift is part of the Fediverse, which means you can interact with users from other compatible social networks.
What this means for you:
- Your public posts may be visible on other instances
- You can follow users from other Fediverse platforms
- Your data may be stored on multiple servers
Federation Benefits
Federation allows you to connect with a much larger community while still enjoying the benefits of a small, well-moderated instance.
First Steps
- Read the Rules: Familiarize yourself with our community guidelines
- Set up your profile: Add a bio, avatar, and header image
- Configure privacy settings: Choose who can see your posts
- Find people to follow: Explore the federated timeline
Privacy Settings
Post Visibility Options
- Public: Visible to everyone, appears on public timelines
- Unlisted: Visible to everyone but doesn't appear on public timelines
- Followers-only: Only visible to your followers
- Direct: Only visible to mentioned users (like a direct message)
Profile Privacy
You can also set your entire account to be private, requiring approval for new followers.
Content Warnings
Content warnings (CW) help create a safer space for everyone. Use them for:
- Sensitive topics (politics, mental health, etc.)
- Spoilers for media
- Eye contact in photos
- Potentially disturbing content
Community Etiquette
- Use Alt Text: Describe images for accessibility
- Be Respectful: Treat others as you'd like to be treated
- Respect Boundaries: Pay attention to bios and pinned posts
- Use Content Warnings: Help others curate their experience
